Flag Football:
Flag Football is one of my favorite units! I incorporate flag football into grades 6-8th.
The beginning of the unit always involves teaching/reviewing skills: -Passing/Catching -Hiking -Cutting/Routing After the skills lessons students are grouped into teams. There is great emphasis placed on teamwork, leadership, helping one another, and respecting individual skill levels. Prior to students participating in game play they practice routing with their team. This is to help students learn technical terms, have a plan, encourage confidence, and creativity among students/teams. Students did not share rout with class. It was decided to keep it "hush hush" until game play. Many teams came up with multiple plays! We have also utilized the App CoachNote which works as an interactive whiteboard for students to draw their ideas rather than erase. |
During the Flag Football unit, students students work towards the District Goal of demonstrating positive social skills, including respect for the rights and feelings of others through cooperating and working as a small team. Students demonstrate this during practice and activity time as well as showing me their understanding in discussions and reflections.
Students were given the opportunity to use technology while working towards our Building Goal of enhancing learning using technology by using the App CoachNote which is an interactive whiteboard. This unit contributes towards my Personal Goal of students developing cognitively. The student shows understanding of the rule, principles, terminology, and strategies related to the sport of football. It also contributes affectively as students work and cooperate with one another over a period of time as a team. Students do an excellent job of coming together in this unit making it one of my favorites. |
Flag Football: Team Reflection
Towards the end of the unit I gave students each a Team Reflection. The purpose of this was for students to recognize the leadership on their team and if the leadership is actually helping (good leadership) or hindering (not helping) your team. Also, what could be improved and how they were going to help. Change cannot happen without ACTION.
Flag Football: Quiz
Checking for understanding of common themes and knowledge of unit.
