Impact on Student Learning
Utilize assessments and reflection to foster student learning and inform instructional decisions.
Student Completing a Volleyball Self-Assessment
In physical education it is important to assess students and provide the opportunity for them to reflect on their skill as well as their efforts. Utilizing various assessments and reflection formats foster students' learning and impact student development. I have learned the importance of creating an assessment that is developmentally appropriate for the students with an element of challenge. At Monadnock, prior to the students Volleyball Self-Assessment, students were aware that they would be completing the assessment and were asked to pay special attention to how they were performing their skills, working with their team, and knowledge of the game. The element of challenge in my assessment for my high school students was to be honest with themselves.
Not only does having assessments in physical education provide evidence of student learning, but it also creates situations for students to cross disciplines by using reading, writing and comprehension skills, and depending on the assessment or reflection, students have the opportunity to work together by communicating with their peers.

Creating Opportunities(Click to enlarge)
Students had the opportunity to coach their peers and be officials of the pickleball games that they observed. This is an example of what 7th grade coaches/officials had to say: "I created and used these slips to give students another opportunity to listen, watch, record, and apply rules that they have learned in the pickleball unit." Also, it gave students the chance to encourage their classmates and remain involved in the game while they were waiting for their turn to rotate in and play.
