South Meadow Girls Soccer
Coaching the South Meadow Girls Soccer team was my first coaching experience. I enjoyed making connections with the girls and seeing their small success and feeling as though I was apart of it in some way. I mean I was their coach, right?
It was challenging coaching a sport that I wasn't 100% confident at myself. I hadn't been coached in soccer since I was 14, and you think I really payed attention to the ins-and-outs of coaching at 14? No.
Being a serious athlete and competitor made me feel confident that I knew what it was to have drive, will, and work ethic; and from my years of being on a team I felt confident that I knew what it was to have cohesion, be a team player, and to practice good sportsmanship. What I wasn't prepared for was teaching these skills to middle school girls.
What I learned from working with this team that I will carry with me is that every athlete is different just like every person is different. Just because they are all wearing the same thing on the outside doesn't mean they work the same on the inside. It's not a team of robots.
As I look to my future coaching experiences I will continue to practice routine,
I will continue to set high expectations of my athletes as people before performance,
I will make it my job to build connections with my athletes so I can best support and motivate them as individuals and collectively as a team.
