Scientific and Theoretical Knowledge
Apply discipline-specific scientific and theoretical concepts critical to the development of physically educated individuals.
My background in human anatomy and physiology, and the strong interest I have in kinesiology and physiology of exercise, has enabled me to be an effective translator to my students. In physical education, I have only had the opportunity to touch upon the basics of health and fitness with my students, and in doing so, I have been able to have strong levels of student engagement and participation through discussion and assignments. It is vital that students from an early age understand how to go about leading a healthy life style and that they have a role model to reinforce it. The interest I have in the health and well being of the human body has encouraged me to continue to read books, journals, and research articles as well as maintain a separate binder full of health-promoting activities and practices.
I live a healthy lifestyle and my students recognize this. I do my best to encourage good choices and to teach my students about what the choice might be for them. In my second student teaching placement, I realized that I needed to promote good health and fitness choices. I orchestrated discussions focused on health-related fitness and have strong student participation. Students would tell me what they did over the weekend that involved a certain component or tell me what they brought for a healthy snack that day.

Below is a newsletter and a research paper I created advocating that physical activity provides students with cognitive benefits.
This is a 4 week training program that I devised for a relatively fit college male. This fitness program shows my knowledge of an appropriate exercise routine and progression based on the individuals history and fitness level. I also recognize the importance of being conscious of the health of your muscles (including stretching) and the fact that exercise should be enjoyable by encouraging this person to rest and do activities that he finds fun.

Below is a presentation on Muscular Dystrophy. It is important as a physical education teacher to be aware of the disabilities of students who are in your class. This presentation shows that when working with a student with a particular disability, I will be certain to learn all I can to become more knowledgeable in the area and better prepared to work with the student.
This is a presentation of a research study I completed in my Kinesiology class that is focused on running economy.
Below is a presentation on genetically engineered foods. This presentation shows my interest in all aspects of my field. Food is something that we all eat and are, therefore, affected by it. It is important to have an awareness for what you and your students are putting into your body. If you want the body to perform well, it needs to be fueled well.
